Tamil Nadu- Ramalingam murder and its background
In a video of 5 th February Ramalingam was seen arguing with group of people who were involved in converting people to Islam in the Thirubhuvanam locality. The argument broke out when they asked Ramalingam to convert to Islam. He took out Muslim skull cap from the person involved and wore himself. In return Ramalingam is seen
applying Vibuthi in the forehead of a person with whom he was arguing, the Muslim person immediately wiped out it from his forehead. The argument of Ramalingam was that he was wore a Muslim skull cap as symbol of respect to Islam. But why the Muslim person refuse to accept Hindu identity since the Muslim person has
immediately rubbed off Vibhuti applied in his forehead by Ramalingam. After a brief argument with three Muslim’s who was involved in conversion activity Ramalingam called them not real Muslims but terrorists involved in forceful conversion of people to Islam. He also accused that many such people are involeved in anti-national activities.
Further, Ramalingam asked the group involved in forceful conversion to go out Village.
The Incident On the evening of 5 th February Ramalingam was returning home from mechanic shop after repairing his motorbike head light with his son. On his way to home, when he reached Mosque street 4 men came
from opposite direction in a car and blocked the way of Ramalingam. Two men got down from the car with chilli powder and knifes used in butcher shops in their hands. They started attacking Ramalingam and his son. When they targeted his son’s neck Ramalingam tried to save his son while doing so the weapon struck on his hand piercing it
open. When Ramalingam tried to resist the attack the assailants hacked on many parts of his body. Once the attackers left the scene his son took him to a local hospital where they refused to admit him.
Then he was taken to Kumbakonam government hospital where he was given very basic treatment .Considering his serious condition the doctor there referred him to Thanjavur government hospital which has an operation theatre facility. But unfortunately Ramalingam passed away due to heavy blood lose. Before his death Ramalingam informed his son that the attackers were relatives of one Riwasuddin whom he know very well. The news of the murder of Ramalingam spread like wildfire and also the video where he is seen arguing with those people involved in conversion. Ramalingam never had any enemies either in business or in personnel life as confirmed by his wife Chitra. His son went on record in a press interview that his father informed him before his death that the killers are relatives of Riwasuddin. His wife Chitra said that Ramalingam was killed only because he opposed the conversion activities two days back and not because any other reasons.
After initial apathy police arrested five members alleged to be the activist of Muslim fundamental organisation Popular front of India.

After the arrest in circular Tirubhuvanam Jmmat asked its members to contribute 2 percent of their earning to extend all kind of support the accused and their family by issuing a notice. Since the Jammat of Tirubhuvanam has decided to provide legal and financial support to the accused. The Jammat also appointed members to coordinate and undertak the support activities.
Ramalingam Personnel background 45 year old Ramalingam was a native of Thirubhuvanam town in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu. He owned a catering and marriage contract business named “THAMIZHAN CATRERES” in
Thirubhuvanam. He was survived by wife Chitra and three sons. Ramalingam was a party functionary of ’Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK)’. Ramalingam was a ‘’secular’’ person who respected other religions equally and maintained cordial relationship with Muslims. Jamal Muhaideen Hijri was the person who inaugurated and also helped
him finding a place for rent to start his business. He felt it as his proud privilege. This he has mentions in his Facebook post. He also attends inauguration of ‘’Fresh Fresh” supermarket belongs to his Muslim friends. After Gaja Cyclone mayhem in a Facebook post Ramalingam offered help in cooking food and providing utensils for
free to the needy and those who was involved in relief work. In the post he clearly mentioned it that it is not for caste organisations or political parties.
Political Reactions Initially only BJP condemned Ramalingam’s murder by Islamic fundamentalist. H.Raja national secretary of the BJP visited the house of Ramalingam’s and mourned his death. PMK founder Ramadass condemned the death as Ramalingam was a PMK functionary. But Anbumani Ramadass who is actually in charge of the
party didn’t condemned the incident. Apart from that many Hindu organisations condemned the incident and offered help to the family of Ramalingam. But seeing strong social media reaction against the murder, the parties initially kept mum fearing loss of Muslim votes later condemned the murder. DMK chief MK Stalin in his official
twitter page condemned the incident but never uttered a word against Islamist fundamentalist who killed Ramalingam. Most of such reactions were name sake as they fears losing minority votes in upcoming election.
